Sherman is excited his brother Leroy won our Halloween contest!
Readers who followed our Halloween contest this year know that the big winner was Leroy, the brown Newfoundland dressed as the Scarecrow from The Wizard of Oz.
We asked Leroy’s owner, Jennifer C. from Strongsville, Ohio, to which 501(c)(3) nonprofit she wanted to give Leroy’s grand prize, a $1,000 donation from our contest partner, Embrace Pet Insurance. She chose the Newfoundland Club of America Rescue, a breed-specific club, rescue and charitable trust.
“My heart belongs to all dogs,” she says, “but my soul belongs to the Newfies, and just like many other rescue organizations they could certainly use the money to help aid in caring for so many Newfies that are currently in rescue,” Jennifer said.
What the NCA Does
The Newfoundland Club of America (NCA) was founded in 1930 as a nonprofit organization and is recognized by the American Kennel Club. The NCA is responsible for the preservation, protection and welfare of the Newfoundland. It provides health, education and rescue programs; safeguards the breed standard; and promotes the historical work of the breed.
In addition to preserving the breed standard and working to find cures for canine disorders and diseases that affect this large breed, the club also actively rescues and rehabilitates Newfs all over the country through regional clubs, members and volunteers.
Snowy’s Rescue Story
Consider the case of Snowy, a Newfie brought to the vet with days old injuries, open wounds, a leg that appeared to need amputation, and maggots eating away at several parts of her body. The owners decided on euthanasia, but the vet persuaded them to sign the dog over instead.
The vet then contacted Newfoundland Rescue and found someone willing to help and provide a home for Snowy. After several surgeries and a lot of love, Snowy was able to find her spark again and has since become a spokesdog for Newfie rescues around the country. The NCA’s devotion to the breed is another reason Jen continues to support and promote the organization through donations, support, sharing information and highlighting the group.
Jen has two Newfoundlands and writes a popular blog, My Brown Newfies. Each day celebrates her dogs and their entertaining and humorous escapades. Her non-Newfie dog and her son’s guinea pig, Gibby, also make cameos from time to time.
