5 Tiny Dog Breeds That Stay Small

Many breeds of dogs start small and stay small. Some people have a preference for tiny breeds because they travel well. These wee companions can easily be carried around, which increases the bond between pet and human.

Here is my list of just a handful (apologies for the pun) of these teeny breeds.

1. Yorkshire Terrier

The Yorkshire terrier is a little dog with a huge attitude. Standing at 6 to 7 inches tall and weighing less than 7 pounds, the Yorkie is a dedicated and protective companion. Although they are high-energy little dogs, they do not require a lot of exercise. They do need considerable grooming, however. The long, silky coat must be brushed regularly.

Yorkies are the perfect pet regardless of the owner’s living arrangements. They are just as happy in a small apartment as they are in a sprawling mansion. This makes the Yorkshire terrier the ideal pet for almost anyone.

2. Papillon

The Papillon is a small and loving companion. They can be from 8 to 11 inches tall and weigh between 7 and 10 pounds. The papillon is sometimes called the butterfly dog, because the ears resemble the wings of a butterfly. Papillons are extremely intelligent and highly trainable puppies. Many dog show enthusiasts use these wonderful little pups for obedience and agility trials.

Daily brushing is necessary to maintain a papillon’s coat. Although the coat is not very long, the feathering and fringes can become tangled. Considered to be odorless pets, Papillons need only occasional bathing. They are low maintenance but high on the list of tiny dogs people love.

3. Chihuahua

The chihuahua is becoming more popular by the day. It is the tiniest breed of dog and is often called a purse pooch. Although standing at less than 8 inches tall and weighing between 2 and 6 pounds, the chihuahua is fearless. Chihuahuas can be temperamental and tenacious, so they are not for everyone; but in the right home, they can be the best pet ever.

Because of its tiny size, the chihuahua does not require much exercise. Grooming time varies according to whether the pup is smooth-coated or longhaired.

4. Affenpinscher

The affenpinscher is a wonderful small canine that is playful and energetic. It is less than 11 inches tall and weighs between 7 and 9 pounds. The rough, shaggy coat and monkeylike expression make the affenpinscher a unique pet. In 2013, an affenpinscher won Best in Show at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show — a high honor indeed!

5. Maltese

A popular small dog is the maltese. They are white in color and have silky coats. Maltese are intelligent and trainable. Playful and high spirited, the maltese loves everyone. They do require daily brushing to maintain their coat. Maltese make exceptional family pets.

I think you should have included Shih Tzus to your list because most of the time they never grow to be more than 12lbs which is considered very small. On another note, I’ve never heard of the Affenpinscher but they sound very cute! :)

    Hi Greg,

Yes, Shih Tzus are cute as a button. With only 5 spots, it was a tough call.

What d’ya say, readers — which other tiny dogs did we unfairly skip over on this list? We’d love to hear your picks.

Toy poodles!! Mine is 7 lbs of dog but 100 lbs of attitude!

  • Eileen

I already have a maltese poodle mix and a Yorkie. They are great pets. My maltese, I found at the pound, she is a sweetheart. My Yorkie, even though he is a guy, he is a drama queen, lol. They bring me so much joy, and I have a lot of fun with them!

I would pick a Lhasa Apso. They have “big dog” attitude in a small package. Mine goes camping and hiking with me. I have never seen such loyalty in a dog. Because he enjoys the outdoors so much, I keep his hair cut short. They require daily grooming if you let their hair grow long. Most fun I’ve ever had with a dog and I grew up with large dogs.

Well I’ve heard of all of these CUTE dogs. But I like the teacup Yorkie…

I am looking for teacup puppies for sale in Perth? Does anyone know of any?
