Phoenix and Gryphon

  • Submitted by: Bonnie and Beth A. of Plainview, NY
  • Pets’ Names: Phoenix and Gryphon
  • Pets’ Ages: 7 years and 10 months
  • Breed: Golden retrievers

It’s time for the Halloween Golden Magic Show! Master Magician Phoenix the Phenomenal is showing off his latest trick. He sawed his little assistant, 8-week-old Gryphon, right down the middle. Abracadabra — Gryphon is in two! But don’t worry, Phoenix will soon put Gryphon back together again!

We created these outfits by putting together pieces from different costumes. We adjusted a child’s suit to fit Phoenix, and attached white gloves to the sleeves that we stuffed so they would look like hands were inside. We also attached a saw and magic wand to the gloves. We finished it off with a black top hat over a blond wig and added a carnation to the lapel. For Gryphon’s costume, we used stretchy silver-sequined material to create wrist bands and a headband with a feather. For the magic boxes, we painted two cartons burgundy with gold trim and attached gold diamonds we had cut out of wrapping paper. We cut holes for the head of the puppy and the body back-end to stick out of. Finally, we created a stage curtain by hanging pieces of curtain onto dowels and attaching them with wire.

Phoenix and Gryphon are half-brothers; they have the same father. They love going on trips, meeting people and going shopping. They are the friendliest dogs ever.

Bandit

  • Submitted by: Melinda K. of Conway, SC
  • Pet’s Name: Bandit
  • Pet’s Age: 6 months
  • Breed: Mixed

Bandit is a rescue puppy that I have had for about two months now. He is full of energy and loves to play. He has already learned how to fetch and enjoys nothing more than being cuddled. I would advise anyone looking for a pet to check out their local animal shelters because there are so many animals out there that need a good home!

McKenzie and Jax

  • Submitted by: Brittany B. of Las Vegas
  • Pet’s Name: McKenzie and Jax
  • Pet’s Age: 5 and 3

Bud

  • Submitted by: Doris R. of Houston
  • Pet’s Name: Bud
  • Pet’s Age: 4

Cloie

  • Submitted by: John P. of Palm Springs, CA
  • Pet’s Name: Cloie
  • Pet’s Age: 7
  • Breed: Pug

Cloie is an amazing pug. She has been a great model for all of my Halloween creations. I made a Liberace costume for myself, but something was missing… the piano. The candelabra lights up. Cloie lights up the rest of the costume with her loving personality. Just like Liberace!

Cinnamon

  • Submitted by: Stacey C. of Atwater
  • Pet’s Name: Cinnamon
  • Pet’s Age: 2
  • Breed: Chihuahua

My Little Hellraiser! This is themed after the Pinhead character in the horror movieHellraiser. This costume was created from scratch. Each nail was patiently glued to her bonnet. I had to create the slopers (patterns) first, then used muslin fabric to create the mock-up. The black gown is made of faux leather. The bonnet was created with nails (from Home Depot, ha ha). I painted the grid lines shown on the bonnet as well. The cube is made of a wooden craft block, painted in gold leaf with hand-drawn designs to simulate the “beckoning box” the character has in the movie.

Roger

  • Submitted by: Janna B. of Charlotte, NC
  • Pet’s Name: Roger
  • Pet’s Age: 4
  • Breed: Boxer

We wanted to be original this year and made Roger a scuba diver! The tanks are spray-painted water bottles, and his wetsuit is a black dog hoodie.

Peaches

  • Submitted by: Carol L. of Farmington, CT
  • Pet’s Name: Peaches
  • Pet’s Age: 3
  • Breed: Calico tiger

My cat Peaches enjoys a little “drama,” so when I put this Halloween ornament near her cat tree she was only too happy to pose in costume! I adopted Peaches and her sister Paprika (a tiger-tortoise) from a local pet shelter, Mary’s Kitty Korner, where I was captivated by their sisters’ affectionate personality and sense of humor. They are truly “Halloween cats” with their shiny black and orange coloring.

Cheyanne

  • Submitted by: Karen G. of Woodlyn, PA
  • Pet’s Name: Cheyanne
  • Pet’s Age: 9
  • Breed: Labrador retriever

My name is Yoda (Cheyanne), and I have come from a faraway place in the universe. I am here to save the galaxy from grave dangers awaiting out there on Halloween night. I will be here to protect all you little trick-or-treaters.

Shelby

  • Submitted by: Kernie S. of Paris, Ohio
  • Pet’s Name: Shelby
  • Pet’s Age: 7
  • Breed: Sheltie

Shelby the Sheltie is a rescue dog adopted from Indian Summers Border Collie Rescue in 2008. After adoption, Shelby and I decided to help others like her, so we began to volunteer at ISBCR. We both love helping scared homeless dogs turn into happy-tails-held-high individuals who find great homes and keep in touch with us. Shelby wanted to be a sheep for Howl-o-ween to make all of her border collie friends at ISBCR proud. She knows that border collies love to herd. “But they won’t herd me,” Shelby said, “because under this sheep wool they know that I’m a herder too!”

  • Pet’s Name: Lightning
  • Pet’s Age: 12
  • Breed: Miniature horse

Lightning is a 12-year-old miniature horse that I’ve had since he was born. I have shown him at 4-H, Open and Circuit shows. Today, however, he is ready to move on to Hollywood and be a movie star!

Odie

  • Submitted by: Kristen K. of South Hackensack, NJ
  • Pet’s Name: Odie
  • Pet’s Age: 2

We wanted a funny, affordable Halloween costume, so we dressed up Odie as “Fifty Shades of Grey”! We made the costume out of a T-shirt and paint swatches — he didn’t like the sleeves, so we made it into a wraparound cape and now he really likes wearing it. Every time we put the costume on, his tail starts wagging. He gets lots of laughs and loves the attention.

Gracie

  • Submitted by: Sarah of Fort Myers, FL
  • Pet’s Name: Gracie
  • Pet’s Age: 4
  • Breed: American bulldog

Honey Boo Boo Child, aka Alana Thompson from TLC’s Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.

“You betta redneckognize my Smoochie!” Kidding…well, sort of! I got the idea from Pinterest originally and then researched more images/quotes of the hit TV series. Costume materials were purchased from Michael’s, Walmart and the Dollar Tree. I already had a lot of material from home that I used as well.

Bruin

  • Submitted by: Colleen O. of Willowbrook, IL
  • Pet’s Name: Bruin

Pandora

  • Submitted by: Stephanie T. of Goldsboro, NC
  • Pet’s Name: Pandora
  • Pet’s Age: 4
  • Breed: American pit bull terrier

Pandora rescued us three years ago! She is a blue pit bull and has changed the minds of many who were leery of her wonderful breed. Pandora is extremely sweet, loyal, beautiful and smart. She loves to swim, catch her ball and go on car rides. Swimming is her favorite activity, and she would live in the pool if she was allowed! She woos everyone she meets with her stunning looks and cute personality. For her fourth birthday on October 4, she dressed up and enjoyed doggie cake and ice cream. She loved her hat, pearls and tutu so much we decided to use it as a Halloween costume. She is a pittie party girl!

Milo

  • Submitted by: Alissa S. of Medford, MA
  • Pet’s Name: Milo
  • Pet’s Age: 7 months
  • Breed: Mixed

My name is Milo, and my parents rescued me from a shelter. I’m so grateful to my parents for giving me such a great life, and I tell them every day with lots of kisses. I love to get a good workout whether it’s a hike in the woods, a fun agility class, a run on the beach or even practicing my boxing skills.

Taffie and Stevie Wonder

  • Submitted by: Callie J. of Shreveport, LA
  • Pets’ Names: Taffy and Stevie Wonder

Freddie

  • Submitted by: Stephanie D. of Portland, ME
  • Pet’s Name: Freddie
  • Pet’s Age: 7
  • Breed: Miniature poodle

This is Freddie! He is the most loving little guy in the world. He doesn’t look too happy in the picture, but that is because my mom and I made the costume ourselves and he had to have multiple fittings to get the costume just right. He is so patient while we pin, measure and mark up alterations. Fred will wear the costume when we go visit a senior center for people with memory loss this weekend; I know the residents will just love it. He is my little lamb, and my life is so much better with him in it.

Wiley

  • Submitted by: Ashley O. of Philadelphia
  • Pet’s Name: Wiley
  • Pet’s Age: 5
  • Breed: Cockapoo

We rescued Wiley from our local SPCA two years ago and instantly fell in love. Wiley is a momma’s boy and loves doing anything and everything with his mommy. Wiley enjoys running “turbo circles” in the yard, going for rides in the car, sleeping in daddy’s spot on the bed, playing with his friends at doggie day camp, and snuggling on the couch with mommy and daddy.

Wiley decided to be Woof, Waldo’s dog, from “Where’s Waldo?” Woof loves to go everywhere with Waldo, just like Wiley loves to follow his mommy. If Wiley were smaller, he could hide among the dogs and dog houses in the background, like Waldo and Woof would do. While Wiley prefers to hang out in a comfy sweater when it gets chilly, he doesn’t mind dressing up and is excited to go doggy trick or treating with his friends!

Sheba

  • Submitted by: Theresa of Norridge
  • Pet’s Name: Sheba
  • Pet’s Age: 20
  • Breed: Siamese

Sheba is a lovely Siamese kitty full of energy and sass. I have had her for 20 amazing years, and she owns my heart! Sheba has many unique qualities; one of them is that she is very vocal and talks all the time. Here, she is dressed as Cleopatra. I like to call her CleoSheba while she pounces around in this fancy costume!

Bolt

  • Submitted by: Christina B. of Colusa
  • Pet’s Name: Bolt
  • Pet’s Age: 2
  • Breed: Domestic cat

Bolt is a ladies man, as evidenced by this photo. He loves long walks down the hallway, a good game of fetch with a bouncy ball or pencil, and a nice serving of tuna.

 Phoenix

  • Submitted by: Melody D. of Hanover
  • Pet’s Name: Phoenix
  • Pet’s Age: 2
  • Breed: Yorkshire terrier

This is Prince Phoenix! He is a 2-year-old Yorkie who loves fun! He enjoys riding in the car, playing with his toys and dressing up. He can often be found lying in the laundry when no one is looking! He is an adorable little pumpkin and is ready for Halloween!

Mr. Hefner and Isabelle

  • Submitted by: Tonya M. of Key West, FL
  • Pet’s Name: Mr. Hefner and Isabelle
  • Pet’s Age: 7
  • Breed: Chihuahua

Mr. Hefner and Isabelle are our two rescued chihuahuas. They both not only tolerate being dressed but actually like it. Mr. Hefner in particular has a swagger about him whenever he is in costume. This year the theme for Fantasy Fest in Key West is “Super Heros, Villians, and Beyond,” and this picture was taken at the annual Pet Masquerade. In Key West even the pets know how to party during Fantasy Fest, and our little crew brought down the house.

Bear

  • Submitted by: Sophie C. of Santa Barbara, CA
  • Pet’s Name: Bear
  • Pet’s Age: 3
  • Breed: Miniature Australian shepherd

The mummy and the skeleton are taking their pumpkin home! Meet Bear, my 3-year-old mini Aussie. My first idea was to have a costume that was funny while Bear was walking. First idea, two dressy humans holding a pumpkin. That didn’t have enough Halloween spirit. Then came the mummy and skeleton. Bear was so patient during all the costume fittings. I have videos that show him walking — very funny. Enjoy and happy Halloween!

Bonnie

  • Submitted by: Mary K. of Greenfield, MA
  • Pet’s Name: Bonnie
  • Pet’s Age: 7
  • Breed: Corgi

Kissy Face

  • Submitted by: Stacey B. of Union, NJ
  • Pet’s Name: Kissy Face
  • Pet’s Age: 1.5
  • Breed: Domestic cat

Kissy Face is just a delight. He was born in my backyard last spring from a neighborhood stray. When I met him, it was love at first sight! Just look at him — how could you not love that face?! His original name was Simba, but he has an obsessive kissing habit — hence, Kissy Face! As you can see, he just loves his bunny costume!

Noodle and Twinkie

  • Submitted by: Sasha H. of Nokomis, FL
  • Pets’ Names: Noodle and Twinkie
  • Pets’ Ages: 8 and 10
  • Breed: Chihuahua

We dressed Noodle up as a cowboy in honor of her Daddy. Twinkie needed an outfit to complement the cowboy, so I thought, Hmmm, what goes with a cowboy? Well, a chuck wagon, of course! I made the chuck wagon from scratch, and she is the cutest chuck wagon ever! Something was still missing, though, because Noodle had nothing to herd — so I made some cows. I ended up painting a range for them to roam, complete with campfire. The whole thing came together in a super cute way.

Both of my dogs are rescues. They like to dress up and be told how pretty they are; it gives them big smiles and makes me laugh. Our goal is to make other people laugh too.

Gizmo

  • Submitted by: Heather of Oscoda, MI
  • Pet’s Name: Gizmo
  • Pet’s Age: 8
  • Breed: Pomeranian cockapoo

Rocco

  • Submitted by: Lisa S. of San Diego
  • Pet’s Name: Rocco
  • Pet’s Age: 4
  • Breed: Pit bull terrier mix

This is my rescue dog Rocco. He enjoys squeak toys, hanging with his friends, naps and Cheerios. This year he decided to be Pope Rocco the First, holy hound dog.

Gustave and Mieka

  • Submitted by: Aastha G. of Marina del Ray, CA
  • Pet’s Name: Gustave and Mieka
  • Pet’s Age: 1 year and 10 months
  • Breed: Maltese

Gustave and Mieka are little fun-loving Maltese. Gustave is our sassy little pup, and Mieka is the sweet one. So of course she gets to dress up as Draco Malfoy, and Gustave is Harry Potter. He portrays true Gryffindor courage during bath time, and she shows true Slytherin cunning in somehow ending up with all the toys and chewies. We had a lot of fun doing this photo shoot. The fluffs loved it too. They know that when the camera comes out, so do the treats. Hope you guys like it!

Cheeta

  • Submitted by: Casey S. of Temple, TX
  • Pet’s Name: Cheeta
  • Pet’s Age: 4
  • Breed: Domestic cat

Cheeta is the perfect kitty. I’m so happy that I decided to adopt her! She is such a good sport, and purrs the entire time she is dressed up. She is a Las Vegas Showgirl this year, and loves her costume!

Beaulieu

  • Submitted by: Ursula W. of Los Angeles
  • Pet’s Name: Beaulieu
  • Pet’s Age: 10 months
  • Breed: Hairless Chinese crested

His name is Beaulieu (“Byoo-lee”), and he is a 10-month-old smart and playful pup who loves the camera. His hair is white and naturally messy when not brushed, where it’ll just stick up with a just a quick stroke. Here, he is Albert Einstein, with his white crest hair mimicking Albert’s crazy head of hair, as well as a complementing mustache. He also has a “pipe” dog bone lying next to his front foot as Albert a lot of times would have a pipe. Beaulieu is a very smart dog, and everyone always has good things to say about him!

Echo

  • Submitted by: Kristin K. of Charlotte, NC
  • Pet’s Name: Echo
  • Pet’s Age: 9
  • Breed: Boston terrier

Echo is wearing her Red, White and Blue and soaring in from the sky in her handmade skydiver costume!

Cooper

  • Submitted by: Deborah E. of Chicago
  • Pet’s Name: Cooper
  • Pet’s Age: 1.5
  • Breed: Cavalier King Charles spaniel

Cooper (or as many refer to him even when not in costume, Super Cooper) is a high-energy, always-ready-for-fun, 19-month-old ruby Cavalier King Charles spaniel. He greets strangers (humans and canine) in the street with the same enthusiasm that he does for close friends; is fearless, never passing up an opportunity to play outside in a park or dive into Lake Michigan; jumps and chases balls like someone’s life depends on it; and is a charmer who will cuddle and kiss like you are the greatest thing in his life — even more than treats and squeak toys. Because so many refer to him as Super Cooper, it is only fitting that his costume reflect his true nature.

Oreo and Callie

  • Submitted by: Kelly M. of Harleysville, PA
  • Pets’ Names: Oreo and Callie
  • Pets’ Age: 1
  • Breeds: Domestic cats

On January 5, 2012, my mom lost her two-year battle with lung cancer. I was heartbroken and needed something to distract my attention from the pain I was feeling. I got Oreo, a 10-week-old kitten (Buzz), one week after my mom died. Oreo spent countless hours lying with me while I cried or just felt sad. About 10 months later, Callie (Woody) showed up on my friend’s patio. I decided to take her home. Oreo and Callie became best friends, just like Buzz and Woody. They are always making me laugh. They chase each other, play together and are excellent little bug killers. I can’t imagine my life without them!

Mia

  • Submitted by: Rebecca C. of Orlando, FL
  • Pet’s Name: Mia
  • Pet’s Age: 10 months
  • Breed: American bulldog mix

Mia is a large puppy. She’s always happy and so serious. She has had quite a bit of attention with this costume! The mane was made for a dog, but I altered it to look more realistic.

Mr. Henry

  • Submitted by: Leslie A. of Los Angeles
  • Pet’s Name: Mr. Henry
  • Pet’s Age: 5
  • Breed: Domestic cat

Mr. Henry loves his stuffed banana, so I decided to dress him up as a banana for Halloween! Also, he’s clearly a male model.

Drogo

  • Submitted by: Jillian of Mendon, MA
  • Pet’s Name: Drogo
  • Pet’s Age: Almost 2
  • Breed: Bearded Dragon

This beautiful sand fire bearded dragon came to us six months ago. His owner could no longer care for him, so we were more than excited to adopt him! He his a very calm and affectionate dragon. We dressed him as a devil to accent his beautiful color!

Kermit

  • Submitted by: Jackie B. of Ann Arbor, MI
  • Pet’s Name: Kermit
  • Pet’s Age: 3
  • Breed: Bearded Dragon

Kermit is my adorable, 3-year-old bearded dragon. He is a sweetheart, and he loves celebrating Halloween. In his spare time, Kermit enjoys basking in the sun, taking naps and snacking on crickets. This year, we decided to dress Kermit up as a jellyfish because he would be the happiest, most lovable sea creature known to man.

Dixie and Dunkin

  • Submitted by: Jessica W. of Greenwich, CT
  • Pet’s Name: Dixie and Dunkin
  • Pet’s Age: 2.5 and 3
  • Breed: Miniature dachshunds

My favorite movie of all time is Titanic. So last week when I was watching it for the millionth time and saw a pet costume contest online, I decided to get creative! My dogs are Jack and Rose, and I am the captain!

Dill

  • Submitted by: Vanessa M. of Texas
  • Pet’s Name: Dill
  • Pet’s Age: 3 months
  • Breed: Shorthair domestic mix

Dill is a 3-month-old kitten I adopted from the SPCA a month ago. He is a loving, cuddly kitten who enjoys snuggling up on the couch and taking a nap; however, when he’s not sleeping he also loves to play with anything and everything. One of his favorite hobbies is preventing me from doing my homework! He loves flipping the pages of textbooks and sprawling out on my computer; therefore, I’d say he’s an innate nerd — which is how I got the idea for “nerdy kitty.” Dill’s costume is homemade, and his picture definitely captures his personality.

Bugsy

  • Submitted by: Lily V. of El Paso
  • Pet’s Name: Bugsy
  • Pet’s Age: 6
  • Breed: Boston terrier

Happy Halloween, friends! This is Bugsy, a Boston terrier, in his ultimate airplane ready to fight for treats and toys.

Somi

  • Submitted by: Ashley H. of Houston
  • Pet’s Name: Somi
  • Pet’s Age: 2.5
  • Breed: Yorkshire terrier

Somi is a 2-and-a-half-year-old German Biewer Yorkie. She loves to cuddle and hang out, and she gets dressed up all the time. So we knew Halloween needed to be extra special! Somi likes to watch movies with me and liked to watch Despicable Me (plus I really like it), so we decided to dress her up like a Minion. And we couldn’t just have her wearing a yellow shirt and some overalls, so we went all out and she is TOTALLY yellow all over (just like a minion) and has overalls, boots and goggles. You can also see some Minion friends in the background, and of course Agnes’ unicorn! Somi wasn’t a rescue dog, but we have worked with a couple of local rescues and do our best to share the truth about “teacup” Yorkies/Malteses/other small breeds and how many health issues these tiny dogs have. At only 4.5 pounds, Somi has already had to deal with some of these problems.

Daisy Mae

  • Submitted by: Melissa M. of Salisbury, NC
  • Pet’s Name: Daisy Mae
  • Pet’s Age: 2.5
  • Breed: Golden retriever

Daisy loves to be outside, so what’s better than having a picnic? Being the picnic!

Dexter

  • Submitted by: Nida F. of Chicago
  • Pet’s Name: Dexter
  • Pet’s Age: 3
  • Breed: Bengal cat

Dexter is a 3-year-old bengal cat that isn’t your typical house cat. He likes to be heard, is super chatty, and if he doesn’t get his way, he’ll tell you (usually in the form of knocking something off the countertops). He is extremely spoiled, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. I mean look at that face — how could we not dress him up for Halloween?!

Peanut

  • Submitted by: Amanda C.
  • Pet’s Name: Peanut
  • Pet’s Age: 7
  • Breed: Chihuahua

This is Peanut, and her favorite holiday is Halloween. Each year her mom custom makes her costume so she can be one of a kind. This year Peanut dressed up as Smurfette and enjoyed having a photo shoot in an enchanted forest just like the one where the real Smurfs live.

Bowser

  • Submitted by: Melody V. of Humble, TX
  • Pet’s Name: Bowser
  • Pet’s Age: 3
  • Breed: Bearded Dragon

Bowser, like most Beardies, is a very laid-back, friendly guy. As you can see, he doesn’t mind dressing up, and he LOVES posing!

Jelly

  • Submitted by: April P. of Wappingers Falls, NY
  • Pet’s Name: Jelly
  • Pet’s Age: 2
  • Breed: Alaskan Malamute

Jelly, aka Amook’s Fluffer Nutter and Jelly, is a long-coat Alaskan Malamute who is 2 years old. Jelly loves making people smile. He is wonderful with children, and he hopes to become a therapy dog in the future. He was featured in our local newspaper last winter after he helped find and rescue a senior blind and deaf cocker spaniel who ran off from her yard and got lost in the woods. Though not trained to do so, he tracked the lost dog’s scent and footprints until he spotted her. Jelly is now a hero in our neighborhood!

We thought it would be fun to make a costume that related to his name, so what better than “Grape Jelly”? We didn’t know if he would keep the costume on, but we were surprised to see that he kept it on happily, for more than an hour! He didn’t even try to take off the stem-and-leaf headpiece. He is such a wonderfully mellow boy full of sweetness, just like grape jelly!

Envy

  • Submitted by: Jessica K.
  • Pet’s Name: Envy
  • Pet’s Age: 5

Envy was dyed (non-toxic) as a zebra for Halloween. During our daily walks, people would pull over their cars to ask if he really was a zebra!

Tuffie

  • Submitted by: Vickie C.
  • Pet’s Name: Tuffie
  • Pet’s Age: 3
  • Breed: Russian blue

When we started fostering kittens for our local humane society, our first litter included Tuffy and his siblings. We fell in love with Tuffy and were deeply saddened when we had to take them all back to the humane society to be spayed/neutered and to find their forever homes. The next morning, we immediately called the humane society and said we would like to adopt “the little gray boy.” They were confused and said there was only one gray one, and it was a girl. Thinking they were looking at the wrong kitten, we went to the humane society. They brought out Tuffy and there she was, all spayed and a girl! We were flabbergasted (since we had been told since Day 1 that she was a he). So off we went with our newly adopted girl. We liked her name so well that we just changed the spelling from Tuffy to Tuffie. We still talk about the day we went to pick up “the little gray boy.”

Chesapeake

  • Submitted by: Kim and Kevin U.
  • Pet’s Name: Chesapeake
  • Pet’s Age: 4
  • Breeds: Russian blue and Siamese

A box is our cat’s costume this year. We were getting ready for our friend’s Octoberfest Party and bought a few cases of Octoberfest beers. As soon as we removed one six-pack, Chessie jumped right in and decided it was her spot! She continued to go back into the box for a week. Once it was empty, we saved the box — and then she wouldn’t use it! We filled it up again leaving it one six-pack shy. And guess what? She hopped right in and let out this howl… Of delight?

  • Pet’s Age: 8
  • Breeds: Chihuahua

This is Odie’s third Halloween with me. I adopted him from the Pixie Project, a non-profit animal rescue in Portland, OR. They took a chance on Odie when no one else would. Odie is kind of a cranky guy, but he’s a big lover at heart. The people at the Pixie Project saw the good in him.

This year I was trying to figure out what I could make Odie for Halloween. I wanted it to be something where I could set up props like he is in scene. I came up with a turkey. I work at an animal hospital, and one of my co-workers said he should be a cooked turkey on Thanksgiving Day. So I ran with it. I had never seen that as a costume on an animal. It is handmade, as all of Odie’s Halloween costumes are. He is very particular about what he will and will not wear. I think he liked the costume this year because it involved food, and Odie likes anything that involves food!

Louie

  • Submitted by: Ann Beldin of Aransas Pass, TX
  • Pet’s Name: Louie
  • Pet’s Age: 4
  • Breeds: Brussels griffon

This year we decided to dress Louie up as Oscar the Grouch. As you can see, color was a little bit of a problem. “But I can pull it off!” said Louie.

Elektra

  • Submitted by: BrittneyLynn of Fenton, MO
  • Pet’s Name: Elektra
  • Pet’s Age: 6 months
  • Breed: Calico cat

When I lost my dear dog (and very first pet) Furby a year ago, both my dog Triskit (who was Furby’s best buddy and practically attached at the hip to him) and I were devastated. After a few months had gone by, I decided that I wanted to adopt another fur friend. I couldn’t handle getting another dog so soon, so I decided to get my first cat! I adopted my little Elektra four months ago from a local rescue, the Humane Society. She has tremendously helped me and Triskit with the grieving process. She is an absolute blessing, and I adore her so much. She is purr-fect!

Nelly and Darci

  • Submitted by: Sara of Huntsville, AL
  • Pets’ Names: Nelly and Darci
  • Pets’ Ages: 5 and 12
  • Breeds: Pom/chi/papillon mix and Pom

Nelly and Darci are dressed as Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke at the VMAs. The costumes are handmade and even include a miniature foam finger.

Banjo

  • Submitted by: Steph P. of Salt Lake City
  • Pet’s Name: Banjo
  • Pet’s Age: 7
  • Breed: Possibly a bearded collie mix

While this picture is of the whole family, obviously Banjo steals the show as Ambrosius from “Labyrinth,” the trusty steed to Sir Didymus. Sir Didymus is a stuffed toy I made to ride on Banjo.

Molly

  • Submitted by: Jacqueline of Clatskanie, OR
  • Pet’s Name: Molly
  • Pet’s Age: 8
  • Breed: Boston terrier

Molly loves to play dress-up, and this year she wanted to be Alice of “Alice in Wonderland.” Every year she dresses up. This year, after getting the costume and making a bow, something still felt like it was missing. So we found a blonde wig at Build-A-Bear, and the costume was complete.

Reba and Bailey

  • Submitted by: Lisa A. of Richmond, VA
  • Pets’ Names: Reba and Bailey
  • Pets’ Ages: 5 and 12
  • Breed: Pug

My husband and I adopted Reba through Pug Rescue of North Carolina two years ago — she was a puppy mill dog. Here she is pictured with her older brother Bailey dressed as Dr. Who, and Reba is dressed as the Tardis. Both costumes were handmade by me.

Twiggy

  • Submitted by: Kathy C. of Martinez, GA
  • Pet’s Name: Twiggy
  • Pet’s Age: 2
  • Breed: Terrier mix

Twiggy is a rescue. She was malnourished and sick when I got her. Hence the name Twiggy. She still maintains sweetness and love to all she meets. She is a joy. I dressed her up for Halloween as Jack in the Box placed in a toy chest with some of her toys. My daughter painted the box, and I made the costume.

Morgan

  • Submitted by: Hannah S. of Denver
  • Pet’s Name: Morgan
  • Pet’s Age: 5
  • Breed: Pug

Morgan is a pug that we rescued from the Ft. Morgan Humane Society two and a half years ago. Shortly after we rescued her, she developed idiopathic epilepsy and has sent us around and around trying to find medications that work. Fortunately for us, she never lost any of her spirit, spunk or love of attention. Her favorite food is anything edible, and her favorite color is anything edible. Her favorite thing to do is anything that involves eating. Here she is dressed up as Scrub-A-Dub-Pug!

Sebastian and Pepper

  • Submitted by: Kris B. of Los Angeles
  • Pets’ Name: Sebastian and Pepper
  • Pets’ Ages: 4.5 and 2.5
  • Breeds: Yorkshire terrier and pit mix

My dogs Sebastian and Pepper are no strangers to the occasional mischief, so I set out to design and create costumes that really brought out their personalities and challenged my creativity. They are DOUBLE TROUBLE at times, so I knew the inspiration for the costumes were becoming clearer. Sebastian is such a little lover, so he perfectly embodied the sweetness of the character Gizmo. Pepper, also a little lover, is in her “terrible 2s,” so she definitely has a mischievous streak that I thought Stripe showed well in the Gremlins movie, the favorite from my childhood.

With my concept in place, I spent $26.71 for felt, hot glue sticks and a package of fiber stuffing. After sketching out the pieces of both costumes onto paper, I took my dogs’ measurements and then used a marker to draw all the pieces onto the felt materials. Next, I began the process of cutting out each piece and its mirrored opposite double so I could later hot-glue the edges around each piece, leaving the inside hollow.

After all my piece edges were glued together, I began the endless process of stuffing the insides to make the costumes appear three-dimensional. The costumes were fitted so that when the dogs sit, it gives the appearance that their costume characters are standing up on two legs as they do in the movie. I had made straps with Velcro attached that I was able to securely hold the costumes together on the dogs. The Velcro straps were also used for both costumes’ helmet ears: an under-the-chin Velcro strap was hot-glued strategically so that the final “helmet” piece of the costume could easily be worn hat-style and securely and snuggly fitted and held in place.

The overall construction took only a couple of days working five or six hours a day. Getting the dogs to stay still for the photo shoot was a reality show in the making! Let’s just say that A LOT of treats were indeed consumed after midnight to get the perfect shot! I’m very pleased with my creation, and I hope you enjoy it as well.

Odie

  • Submitted by: Lorraine D. of San Diego
  • Pet’s Name: Odie
  • Pet’s Age: 8
  • Breed: Russell terrier

This is 8-year-old Russell terrier Odie, and this is his fourth year in a row dressing up together with me. I have more fun dressing up with Odie than I had dressing up as a kid!

This year I landed on the idea of “The Thanksgiving Turkey and the Hungry Pilgrim”! I purchased the table decorations from various stores and put together the dinner table at home using a flat dolly for the base and found the turkey and pilgrim costumes online. Odie is such a calm, patient pup and just hangs out in her costume on the platter while I roll her around. I really hope to bring lots of smiles to people’s faces with our goofy costume idea Happy Howl-o-ween!

Thursday

  • Submitted by: Shannon M. of New Castle, PA
  • Pet’s Name: Thursday
  • Pet’s Age: 2
  • Breed: Ferret

Thursday is a very outgoing ferret and loves people and other animals alike. He enjoys the attention he gets while dressing up and even poses for the camera. Sometimes he needs help — for example, being held up for photos, but he never fusses. Thursday’s favorite pastime is chasing cat rattle balls around the house, dunking his head into water, taking trips in the car, going outside for walks and being held.

As you can see, Thursday had to be held up for the photo to show the detail in the outfit. While he never fusses over being dressed up, he cannot stand upright on his own in costume. I was inspired to make this outfit after seeing what costumes are available out there for ferrets. I wanted to make something different.
